Fleshquake The tremble of the flesh

A video project and independent publication exploring freedom of movement, beauty ideals, and critical societal norms. It challenges Western notions of beauty, normality, and decency by examining the relationship between body enhancement and identity.

The project investigates movement research through tailor-made costumes designed to reflect body modification concepts. In 2019, the artists began studying cosmetic surgery and medical silicone, using biodegradable materials like agar-agar to replicate breast and buttock implants. While the material resembles silicone, its fragile nature results in a shorter lifespan. These body enhancements, presented as garments, aim to redefine the "plastic body" and its standardized ideals of perfection. By exploring constructions of femininity, sexuality, gender politics, and the objectified dancing body, Fleshquake challenges contemporary beauty trends and the rules that shape them.

Fleshquake: The Tremble of the Flesh premiered at the De Tour exhibition at De School, Amsterdam. It was also presented at The New Intimacy during Dutch Design Week 2021 and was part of the final exhibition Het Einde at De School in 2023.
