Pen Plotting Bio-based Inks
A series of pen-plotted drawings and graphics showcasing the research from The Ink Project, where the craft of creating bio-based inks intersects with digital printing technology.
This research explored applying CMYK bio-based inks—developed in collaboration with Dr. Jos Poolman (PhD in Chemistry and teacher at the Bio Chemistry Department of Hogeschool Rotterdam)and produced at BlueCity Lab—first to inkjet printers and later to an open-source digital pen-plotter. The pen-plotter experiments were conducted in partnership with Laboratorium Bio and the FormLab at KASK Ghent.
The CMYK colors were created using plants, algae, and fungi to replicate the four-color palette of digital printing in an environmentally conscious way. The pen-plotted prints catalog these vibrant colors, each with unique names and codes, functioning as a visual palette of the research.
As part of this project, I designed and published a temporary online archive, an open-source library that documented the research in detail. This archive was accessible from November 2023 to November 2024, offering a deeper look into the processes and findings of The Ink Project.
